STUMPS | So that's end of opening day's play. India walk back as the happier of the two sides and why not. The visitors have managed to pick nine wickets on a pitch that was decent enough for batting. Sam Curran (24) and James Anderson (0) are the two unbeaten batsmen. Ravi Ashwin was star performer for India as he scalped four wickets.

Do join us tomorrow for second day's action.

01 Aug, 21:42 (IST)

OUT! One more bites the dust. England are losing the plot here and India are taking full use of it. Ashwin is rewarded for bowling intelligently. Jos Buttler fails to last long. He was looking to defend it, doesn't get to the pitch of the ball. It misses the edge of the bat, hits him on the pad. No review taken and rightly so. Buttler lbw b Ashwin 0(2)

01 Aug, 21:30 (IST)

OUT! England lose another wicket here. India chipping away with wickets here. Umesh Yadav now removed Bairstow. The hosts have now lost half the side. Bairstow was looking to cut the ball, he gets a bottom edge and onto the stumps. Bairstow b U Yadav 70(88)

01 Aug, 21:18 (IST)

OUT! Against the run of play, England have lost the wicket of well-set Joe Root. The England is run-out, sadly. Brilliant fielding that by Virat Kohli. He catches Root short at the non-striker's end. Root run out (Kohli) 80(156)

01 Aug, 21:05 (IST)

England have made a quick start to the third and final session. In seven overs so far, in this session, Root and Bairstow have added 36 runs. Meanwhile, Bairstow is nearing his half-century.

01 Aug, 20:16 (IST)

It's tike for tea break on the opening day of the first Test. In the second session, 26 overs were bowled and England managed to score 80 runs for the loss of two wickets. Meanwhile, Joe Root is batting on 65 and giving him company is Jonny Bairstow on 27.

Do join us back for the day's final session.

01 Aug, 19:41 (IST)

Jonny Bairstow has now joined England captain Joe Root in the middle. Meanwhile, Root has gone past his fifty. That's 12th half-century for the right-hander against India in 12 Tests.

01 Aug, 19:14 (IST)

OUT! Mohammed Shami has trapped David Malan in front of the wickets. The back comes back in and Malan misses the line of the ball. He opts for DRS but all in vain. Malan lbw b Shami 8(14)

01 Aug, 18:48 (IST)

OUT! Mohammed Shami breaks the second-wicket stand. He removes Keaton Jennings. Shami is reintroduced in the attack and it proves fruitful for India. Jennings edges one back onto the stumps. Jennings b Shami 42(98)

01 Aug, 18:33 (IST)

The second session has begun with England batsmen being little cautious and rightly so. Keaton Jennings and Joe Root will be looking to dominate in the second session of the day.

01 Aug, 17:39 (IST)

So, at lunch on the opening day, England have fairly recovered from the loss of Alastair Cook. Keaton Jennings and Joe Root have added 57 off 115 balls for the second wicket and are going strong. Jennings is batting on 38 while Root is on 31.

Join us for the action after the lunch break.

01 Aug, 16:57 (IST)

Virat Kohli has now used four bowlers, Mohammad Shami is the fourth one. Meanwhile, England rebuild after the fall of Alastair Cook's wicket as Keaton Jennings and Joe Root have now added 36 for the second wicket.

01 Aug, 16:27 (IST)

England captain Joe Root has made it to the middle following Cook's dismissal.  Umesh Yadav has been taken off the attack and it is Ishant Sharma and Ravi Ashwin bowling in tandem.

01 Aug, 16:11 (IST)

OUT! Ravi Ashwin does the trick. He removes Alastair Cook in his second over. Ashwin comes around the wicket and pitches the ball around leg. Cook is undone by the massive turn and the ball goes past the outside edge, hits the top of off-stump. Cook b Ashwin 13(28)

01 Aug, 15:54 (IST)

Couple of boundaries for Alastair Cook and one for Keaton Jennings as well.  Ishant started on a positive note and managed to go past the outside edge of Cook couple of times. Umesh, on the other hand, has been bit wayward with his bowling.

India’s tour of England is in its last phase. It is an all-important five-match Test series. The first Test begins today at Edgbaston. India arrives into the series as number one ranked Test side and would love to play like that only. However, outplaying England in England won’t be that easy for the sub-continent giants. Kohli during the 2014 tour in five Test matches failed miserably. In ten innings, the right-handed batsman managed to score just 134 runs at an average of 13.40. His struggle against England pacers was there for all to see. The Indian captain has worked hard and since then has improved as a batsman. And centuries on Australia and recent South Africa tour bear testimony to it. Kohli is expected to dish out better performance this time around and it will be interesting to see how he responds to the challenge. IND vs ENG Day 1 1st Test Live Score and Commentary.

Meanwhile, on the eve of the Test, the home side announced their playing XI. England included leg-spinner Adil Rashid and left out Moeen Ali, who during the 2014 tour had India in all sorts of trouble with his bowling. The hosts have also included 20-year-old pacer, Sam Curran.  Amul’s Latest Topical Is About Virat Kohli vs James Anderson Battle Ahead of India vs England 1st Test

India, on the other hand, are likely to include in-form batsman KL Rahul in place of Shikhar Dhawan. The pitch is expected to favour batsmen largely but cloud cover is expected to remain throughout the match and thus both England and India will be tempted to go with just one spinner. Ravi Ashwin, in that case, looks like to be one Indian think tank will favour playing.
