The ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC), 2019 will kick off from Thursday (May 30) where the first match will take place between England and South Africa at The Oval. This time the CWC 2019 will be played in the Round Robin format where the total number of 45 league matches will take place in addition to three more games, which would be semi-finals and final. The 12th edition of CWC 2019 will take place for the 5th time in England and Wales. Top 10 Test playing nations will feature in World Cup 2019 tournament. The previous CWC was held jointly in Australia and New Zealand, where the Australian team won the World Cup trophy. What is the Round Robin Format?

A round-robin tournament, which is also known as all-play-all-tournament, is a competition in which each contestant meets all other contestants at least once. The upcoming CWC 2019 will be played in the single Round Robin Format which resembles CWC 1992. This format is also used in two major T20 Cricket leagues- Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League.

Format of CWC 2011 & 2015

A total number of 14 teams participated in CWC 2011 and 2015 which were divided into two groups of 7 each. The seven nations of a group played against each other from which the top 4 from each group qualified for the quarterfinal.

Point System and NRR in CWC 2019

The team winning the match will be awarded two points, while team losing will get nothing. In case of a tie and wash-out, both teams will get one point each. After playing all 9 league matches, the total accumulative points of a team as per their standing will decide their qualification for the semis. The team finishing on top 4 positions will make it to the semi-final.

In the case of teams finishing on the same point, their progress to semis will be based on Net Run Rate (NRR). The NRR in a tournament is the average runs per over scored by a team scores across throughout the series, minus the average runs per over scored against them across the whole tournament. In case of a tie in the final of CWC 2019, super over will take place as ICC reinstated its use for the final of World Cup tournament on Jan 29, 2015. There is also reserve day kept for both semi-finals and final in CWC 2019.
