Mohammed Shami scalped first hat-trick of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (CWC 2019) as he registered figures of 4/40 against Afghanistan at the Rose Bowl in Southhampton. Shami’s hat-trick came in the final over of the match when Afghanistan needed 16 runs to win. The pacer accounted for Mohammad Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb ur Rahman to become the second Indian bowler to take a hat-trick. Before Shami, eight bowlers have taken a World Cup hat-trick with Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Lasith Malinga achieving the feat twice. Malinga took hat-tricks in 2007 and 2011 editions of the World Cup. This is now the tenth instance of a bowler taking a World Cup hat-trick. Interestingly, India’s Chetan Sharma was the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the World Cup match. The first three editions of the World Cup witnessed no hat-trick at all. Then again in 1992 and 1996, there was no hat-trick in World Cups. Interestingly, Asian teams have scalped six out of ten hat-tricks. Saqlain Mushtaq was the first spinner to take a World Cup hat-trick and then in 2015 edition, South Africa’s JP Duminy became the second spinner to achieve the feat. Chaminda Vaas continues to be the only left-armer to take a World Cup hat-trick.
