Mohammed Shami scalped first hat-trick of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (CWC 2019) as he registered figures of 4/40 against Afghanistan at the Rose Bowl in Southhampton. Shami’s hat-trick came in the final over of the match when Afghanistan needed 16 runs to win. Before Shami, eight bowlers have taken a World Cup hat-trick with Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Lasith Malinga achieving the feat twice. Malinga took hat-tricks in 2007 and 2011 editions of the World Cup. This is now the tenth instance of a bowler taking a World Cup hat-trick. The first three editions of the World Cup witnessed no hat-trick at all. Then again in 1992 and 1996, there was no hat-trick in World Cups. Interestingly, Asian teams have scalped six out of ten hat-tricks. Saqlain Mushtaq was the first spinner to take a World Cup hat-trick and then in 2015 edition, South Africa’s JP Duminy became the second spinner to achieve the feat. Chaminda Vaas continues to be the only left-armer to take a World Cup hat-trick.
