Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur becomes the first women’s cricketer from India to smash a century in T20 Internationals. The right-handed batter achieved the feat against New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Harmanpreet’s century came off just 49 balls. Harmanpreet, who came to bat at five, smashed seven fours and eight sixes during her innings as she along with young Jemimah Rodrigues dismantled the White Ferns bowling attack. Despite losing three wickets for just 40 runs, India went on to post 194 from their allotted 20 overs, the highest total in Women’s World T20 history.
Harmanpreet and Rodrigues 134 runs for the fourth wicket to turn the tide in their team’s favour. Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat. White Ferns struck early in the second over when Lea Tahuhu removed Taniya Bhatia. In the fourth over, India lost another opener Smriti Mandhana as Tahuhu accounted for her as well. Dayalan Hemalatha was the third wicket to fell as India looked in all sorts of trouble.
Harmanpreet and Rodrigues both started cautiously and then started attacking bowlers. The New Zealand bowlers found it tough to separate the two. India eventually posted a record total. India, who have never won the Women’s World T20 title, are placed along three-time champions Australia, New Zealand, rivals Pakistan and Ireland in group B. In their next match, India face Pakistan at the same venue.
