MS Dhoni getting run out courtesy the brilliant throw by Martin Guptill ended any chance that India had against New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. However, after Dhoni’s dismissal and India’s loss, a picture went viral on social media and especially Twitter that there were six fielders outside the circle instead of five. The claim was also backed by an image which showed Dhoni standing in the middle and the field spread with six fielders outside the circle during the last power-play (effective from 40 to 10 Overs
Many users on Twitter and few verified personalities also tweeted the image and the claim. India lost the match by 18 runs after Dhoni’s dismissal.

Alt News, the fake news buster, found out that the graphic used to back the claim didn’t match up to it. In the report, it comes out that the image shared actually belonged to the previous ball and that it was a graphical error by the broadcaster which led to the confusion. Therefore the news that an umpiring error or connivance by New Zealand fielders cost India the match and world cup has proved false.
Fact check
New Zealand's Fielding Violation Led to MS Dhoni's Dismissal Through Run Out by Martin Guptill in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
The image shared to back the claim has proved to be an error on the part of the broadcaster and does not go with the claim of fielding changes made as claimed in the social media posts.
