England registered a comprehensive 104-run victory against South Africa in the first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at The Oval. The hosts bowled out South Africa for 207 runs, who were chasing a target of 312 runs. Apart from Jofra Archer’s three wickets, Ben Stokes chipped in with two wickets. Barring wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, none of the South Africa batsmen got going. De Kock scored 68 off 74 balls while van de Dussen managed 50 off 61 balls. South Africa kept losing wicket at regular intervals and that made things tough for them. Hashim Amla was forced to retire hurt after being hit on the helmet off Archer. Though Amla came out to bat later but did not contribute much.
Following Amla’s injury, South Africa lost two quick wickets in the shape of Aiden Markram and Faf du Plessis. It was Archer who accounted for both the wickets. De Kock and van de Dussen then added 85 runs for the third wicket to help South Africa rebuild. However, South Africa lost wickets quickly as batsmen failed to form partnerships.
