England beat Australia by eight wickets in CWC 19 semi-final and also beat them 2-1 in the recently concluded T20I series. Australia though will be confident of a good start after finishing the T20I series with a comfortable win in the third and final T20I match. They have, however, lost both of their previous two ODI series against England. Aaron Finch’s men were thrashed 4-1 at home in 2018 and trounced 5-0 in England in the same year. They will be eager to turn around the result this time around.

Steve Smith has been left out from the playing XI for the first ENG vs AUS ODI match. According to reports, the right-handed batsman injured himself during an intra-team practice match and has been rested for this game especially with the IPL 2020 starting in a week's time. Marcus Stoinis has been included in the playing XI as Smith's replacement. Marnus Labuschagne will also make his return to the Australia playing XI after missing out T20I series.
England have also recalled Jofra Archer for this ODI series. Archer will be playing his first ODI match since bowling the super over that won England the World Cup title. Jos Buttler also makes his return to the side after withdrawing from the third and final T20I series.
