Indian Premier League (IPL), will see less of erroneous decision-making by the Umpires, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally given a go-ahead for the usage of Decision Review System (DRS), this year. The much-acclaimed system that has been used in International cricket for a long time now, will finally make its presence felt in the IPL. IPL 2018 will see the debut of the DRS system after much resistance from BCCI previously.
As per the report in The Indian Express, a senior BCCI official has said that the board is set to implement DRS in IPL as well. The officer quoted, “We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway, we have been using it for India’s international matches for over a year and a half now.”
The development comes as an interesting news as the BCCI had always taken a hard stance against the controversial DRS system in the past. The Indian Cricket Board, in the previous years, had not budged from their stand of not using it, alleging it to not fool proof. Even Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar was not convinced with the technology being foolproof.
However, in November 2016, against the home series against England, the BCCI had softened its stand against the DRS and had allowed its usage. With the DRS technology is finally introduced in the IPL too, the Twenty20 (T20) tournament is going to be more exciting. Will we see ‘Dhoni Review System’ taking over in IPL tournament too? Former India skipper MS Dhoni has often been credited with opting for successive DRS calls. It will be enthralling to see if the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper is able to replicate his ‘blue jersey’ form in ‘yellow jersey’ in context of DRS usage.
With DRS in the picture now, it will be interesting to see how the players make the most of it. The cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) is scheduled to begin on April 7, and the final of the tournament being played on May 31.
