Woakes also did a stellar job with the ball as he dismissed the dangerous Rohit Sharma and gave very little runs in his overs. The catch broke the partnership between Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, which was getting India back into the match. Rishabh Pant finally got a chance to play for India in the world cup after all rounder Vijay Shankar had to be dropped from the match following a "niggle in the toe", as explained by India captain Virat Kohli during the toss.
Earlier, England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bat first against India. England openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow got off to a great start as the openers put together 160 runs on the board. Ben Stokes provided the much needed ending with his 79 to help India post the formidable total of 337/7 in 50 overs.
