BCCI To Reportedly Release Advertisement for Role of Team India’s New Head Coach, Rahul Dravid Free To Apply if He Wants to, Reveals Jay Shah
Rahul Dravid was named head coach of the Indian cricket team back in 2021 and later, extended his stay after the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The former Indian cricketer's contract runs out in June.
In a major development, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has revealed that an advertisement for the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team is set to be released soon. Rahul Dravid had assumed the role of the Indian cricket team's head coach at the end of the 2021 T20 World Cup and his tenure came to an end with the ICC World Cup 2023 final, which saw the Men in Blue suffer a heartbreaking loss to Australia. The former Indian cricketer had subsequently extended his stay and would be in charge of Team India in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Shah, as per a report in Cricbuzz, stated that Dravid could reapply for the role if he is keen on doing so. "Rahul's tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so," he said. The report also added that it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprised of Sulakshana Naik, Jatin Paranjpe and Ashok Malhotra, which would determine if the Team India new head coach would be an Indian or a foreigner. Shah added, "That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India." Duncan Fletcher was the last foreign head coach that Team India had and the Men in Blue won the 2013 Champions Trophy with him at the helm. Interestingly, India have not been able to win an ICC trophy since then despite coming close on several occasions. Shah also shed light on the 'Impact Player' rule in the IPL, something that has been a talking point. IPL 2024 saw many high-scoring matches, with teams getting to play an extra-batter. The BCCI secretary stated that the rule is not a permanent one, and whether to continue it or not would be decided after discussions with the franchises and several other stakeholders. Besides this, Shah also stated that Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya will be playing domestic white-ball cricket.
