BCCI to Announce IPL Retention Rules Soon, Franchises Could Be Allowed to Retain Five Players Ahead of Indian Premier League 2025 Auction: Report

The Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction preparations are in full swing and as per a report, the BCCI is expected to allow up to retentions to IPL teams ahead of the event. The IPL 2025 auction is likely to be held in the month of November and December this year.

The Indian Premier League is one of the most followed T20 tournaments in the world wherein world-class international players come to India and play for ten different teams to fight for one trophy. The IPL 2025 auction preparations are in full swing and as per a report by The Indian Express, prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could let the IPL teams hold onto five players. The report further adds that there will be no Right to Match Card (RTM) available for the IPL franchises. If BCCI allows five retentions for each team, this will be great news for Mumbai Indians as they can retain there major names such as Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. The BCCI had a deep discussion with the owners of each IPL team in a recent meeting. There were several claims regarding the retention rules where at one end, some teams wanted up to eight player retentions whereas some of them opposed the idea of mega auction. As per a report by IANS, the IPL 2025 auction is expected to take place in the months of November and December. Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022, each team was allowed to retain up to four players. However, the major obligation was that teams could not retain more than three Indian players and not more than four Indian players. There is still no clarity regarding how many foreign players can be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. The IPL 2024 mini auction saw players such as Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc go for a whopping price of more than INR 20 crores which broke all the barriers. The same trend may continue in IPL 2025 auction as well if big Indian names go under the hammer.
