Barbados Tridents outplayed the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the finals of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2019 and clinch the tournament title. The Jason Holder led Tridents had a mixed campaign in the latest edition of CPL but the side held their nerves in the all-important finals and thus win the clash. Jonathan Carter shined with the bat and scored a blistering fifty in the first innings. In the bowling department, pacer Raymon Reifer took four wickets and ensured the team’s victory. The Barbados side posted 171 runs in the first inning and won the match by 27 runs.
Earlier in the match, Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Johnson Charles (39) and Alex Hales (28) gave the side a good start. In spite of that, the side’s middle-order collapsed and big guns like Shai Hope, Shakib Al Hasan, and skipper Holder were dismissed for low scores. However, a 27-ball fifty from Carter powered Barbados to 171 in the first innings. While chasing, the Amazon Warriors never looked in the contest as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The likes of Shoaib Malik, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer failed with the bat and the Warriors could manage mere 144 runs in 20 overs. Reifer was the pick of the bowlers as he took four wickets and guided the team to a 27-run victory.
Jonathan Carter was named as the Man of the Match while leg-spinner Hayden Walsh was adjudged the Man of the Tournament. This was the second instance when the Tridents emerged as the champions of the T20 tournament. They won their first title back in 2014. Many local lads like Fabien Allen and Hayden Walsh have displayed their capability in the tournament and will certainly eye a berth in West Indies squad for ICC World T20 2020.
