Bangladesh women’s cricket team made sure their victory over India a few days back was no flash in the pan as they win the Women’s Asia Cup T20 2018 after defeating Harmanpreet Kaur-led side in the finals as well on Sunday. Chasing paltry 112, Bangladesh women reached the target in 20 overs with Nigar Sultana scoring 27 runs. Meanwhile, this is Bangladesh women’s second win over India in an international game across any format. Apparently, this is Bangladesh’s maiden Women’s Asia Cup title.

The final turned out to be closely fought contest all thanks to Poonam Yadav’s splendid bowling. The leg break bowler returned impressive figures of 4/9 in her quota of four overs to make things difficult for Bangladesh.

At one stage, Bangladesh were looking in a good position with openers putting up a decent partnership. Poonam Yadav then struck regularly to account for Bangladesh’s top four batters. She removed Shamima Sultana, Ayasha Rahman, Fargana Hoque and dangerous Nigar Sultana to help India make a comeback.

The match then went down to last over with Bangladesh needing nine off it. Harmanpreet decided to bowl herself, but the ploy did not work despite the panic in Bangladesh batting ranks, which caused two run outs. Eventually, needing two off the last ball, Jahanara Alam hitting with winning runs as Bangladesh clinched their maiden Women’s Asia Cup title.

Earlier, put to bat, India Women were restricted to 112 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Khadija Tul Kubra and Rumana Ahmed scalped two wickets each as Bangladesh bowlers dominated the proceedings throughout. For India, skipper Harmanpreet led from the front with a 42-ball 56. She smashed seven furs during her stay before being dismissed on the last ball of the Indian innings. Apart from her no other batter got going with second highest being just 11 runs. With this win, Bangladesh stopped India’s winning streak of seven Women’s Asia Cup titles.
