The day one of the Ashes 2019 which is currently underway at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester witnessed a rather strange sight. The post-lunch session of the Ashes 2019 witnessed a lot of gusty winds. Now due to this, the bails kept on falling from the stumps and the umpires were forced to get rid of the same for a while. For quite too many times, empty packets, trash and other waste floated across the stadium and the play had to be halted. Steve Smith Sweeps Off a Football to the Boundary During Ashes 2019, 4th Test Match, Day 1 (Watch Video).

However, the umpires getting rid of the bails evoked quite too many reactions on social media as the netizens debated about the same. As per ICC’s Law 8.5, “The umpires may agree to dispense with the use of bails, if necessary. If they so agree then no bails shall be used at either end. The use of bails shall be resumed as soon as conditions permit.” The law further adds, “If the umpires have agreed to dispense with bails in accordance with Law 8.5, it is for the umpire concerned to decide whether or not the wicket has been put down.”

“After a decision to play without bails, the wicket has been put down if the umpire concerned is satisfied that the wicket has been struck by the ball, by the striker’s bat, person or items of his/her clothing or equipment,” states the law further.
