The continental cricket tournament- Asia Cup- is all set to enter its 16th edition. The Asia Cup 2023 features six teams- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal. The six teams have been divided into two groups, with each pool containing three teams. India, Pakistan and Nepal are in Group A while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group B. As per the Asia Cup 2023 schedule, two teams from each group will head into the next round called Super Fours. Each team in the Super Fours round will play three matches, thereby facing the other three teams once. After the Super Fours round, the top two teams will head to the final. As per the Asia Cup 2023 schedule, there will be no semifinals. India and Pakistan are likely to face-off in the Super Fours round of the Asia Cup 2023 as well.
Pakistan was originally scheduled to host the Asia Cup 2023, but with India refusing to travel to the neighbouring nation Sri Lanka was named as the venue. However, Pakistan will host four games of Asia Cup 2023 including the opening match between Pakistan and Nepal. Multan and Lahore will host the Asia Cup 2023 matches in Pakistan while Kandy and Colombo will host the matches in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka come into the Asia Cup 2023 as defending champions, having won the 2022 edition which was played on T20 format. 2018 was the last time, Asia Cup was played in the ODI format. India won the tournament by defeating Bangladesh in the final. The Men in Blue have won the Asia Cup record seven times followed by Sri Lanka’s six title wins. Pakistan have managed to win the Asia Cup title just twice.
