Virat Kohli has been rested for the important series of the Asia Cup 2018 which is all set to kick off on September 15, 2018, in UAE. The workload on the skipper has forced the BCCI to take this decision. Rohit Sharma now steps into Virat Kohli’s shoes as a skipper for the mega tournament. Sharma, who enjoys a great captaincy record with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League by walking away with the title thrice, also has a great record as an ODI skipper.
It was in December 2017 that Sharma was made the skipper of the ODI team against Sri Lanka. India played a couple of tests, three ODIs and three t20 matches against Lanka. Let’s check out the captaincy record of Rohit Sharma in the ODIs. Sharma lost his first match as the captain against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma unfollows Virat Kohli
In the first ODI, India lost by 7 wickets as the batsmen could not even last for 50 overs and made a paltry score of 112 runs. The total went on to be India’s lowest total at home when batting first in ODIs. Played at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, Dharamshala, India lost their first five wickets for 16 runs, their lowest total in ODIs, and their top five batsmen aggregated 13 runs, also their lowest total in ODIs. However, India made an amazing comeback in the second match as the skipper of the team led the squad from the front. Smashing a superb knock of 208 runs at Mohali, India put up the total of 392 runs. With this, Rohit became the first Indian batsman to score three double centuries in ODIs and also became the first batsman to score two double centuries against the same opposition. India’s Yuzvendra Chahal also bowled amazingly well snapping three wickets conceding 35 runs and Sri Lanka was all down on 141 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav did wonders in the third ODI by snapping three wickets giving away 42 runs. Sri Lanka was out on the score of 215 runs in 44.5 overs. With Shikhar Dhawan making a century, India walked away with the last laugh and won the game by 8 wickets. After basking in the glory of winning the series by 2-1, Rohit was appointed as the captain for Nidhas Trophy as well which was a t20 tournament. With Asia Cup 2018 being almost 10 days away, India’s hopes would be pinned up on the hitman Rohit Sharma!
