The inaugural edition of Asia Cup was held in 1984 in Sharjah. It was played in the round-robin tournament and India emerged winners by defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. After missing the 1986 edition, India’s second participation was in 1988. India won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka in the finals to lift their second trophy.

In 1990-91, India won its third Asia Cup and once again defeated Sri Lanka in the final. This edition of Asia Cup was held in India and Pakistan had pulled out due to political tensions with India. The 13th edition of the Asia Cup, in 2016, was for the first time played in T20 format due to the World T20 which followed the tournament.
