Ajit Wadekar passed away yesterday in the late evening at the Jaslok Hospital, in Mumbai. No sooner he passed away, tributes from cricketers like Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, Harsha Bhogle started pouring in. Hailing his feat, the cricketers offered condolences. Now, even Team India collectively paid tribute to the former Indian captain.
The members of the Indian team offered a two-minute long silence to pay tribute to Ajit Wadekar ahead of their practice session at the Trent Bridge. The official page of the Indian cricket team shared the snap on their pages. The caption read, “#TeamIndia members observe a two-minute silence to condole the sad demise of former India Captain Ajit Wadekar.”
Sachin Tendulkar's heartfelt tweet on Ajit Wadekar's sad demise reads: "Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Ajit Wadekar Sir. He was someone who was instrumental in bringing out the best in us during the 90s. We’ll always be grateful for his advice and guidance. Praying for strength for his family during this difficult time. 🙏 RIP".
Out of the 37 matches, Ajit Wadekar scored 2,113 runs and scored 14 half-centuries. He played only a couple of ODI games and score 73 runs. For his contribution in the field of sports, the Government of India had honoured him with Arjuna Award in 1967, and Padmashri Award (country’s fourth highest civilian honour) in 1972. Wadekar was also the recipient of CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, Sportsperson of the Year Award, and also the Castrol Lifetime Achievement Award.
