Ajantha Mendis Announces Retirement From All Forms of Cricket, the Sri Lankan Mystery Spinner is Widely Popular for his Bowling Variations

Sri Lanka bowler Ajantha Mendis announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday, August 28. The mystery spinner last played last for Sri Lanka in December 2015, in an ODI match against New Zealand.  The right-arm bowler was popular for his many variations in bowling like off-break, googly, leg-break, flipper, top-spinner and especially the carrom ball.

Sri Lanka bowler Ajantha Mendis announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday, August 28. The mystery spinner last played for Sri Lanka in December 2015, in an ODI match against New Zealand. The 34-year-old cricketer is regarded as one of the best spinners to play cricket. After Mendis brought down the curtains on his cricket career, his teammate Angelo Mathews wished him good future. In a Twitter post, Mathews wrote, "Congratulations menda on a short but great career.Unfortunately injuries kept u away but god is kind and will open plenty of avenues to you. Mendis had a small but impressive international career for Sri Lanka. The spinner played 19 Test matches along with 87 ODIs and 39 T20Is. He bagged 70 wickets in 31 Test innings. In ODIs, he clinched 152 wickets in 84 innings. Mendis also managed 66 wickets in his T20I career.   Mendis also played for Pune Warriors in Indian Premier League. He played his last IPL match against Mumbai Indians in 2013. He won ICC's 'Emerging Player of the Year' award in 2008. In 2014, he suffered a back injury which affected his cricket career.
