These moments of pure sporting ecstasy should act as an inspiration for the Indian team to play some good competitive cricket.
The Mecca of Cricket, the Lord's Stadium in England has a rich history, and for decades it has been a place of great admiration for cricket fans around the world. For any budding cricketer, playing at Lord’s is a dream, and for those that are lucky enough to fulfil it, it becomes a cherished memory. The Virat Kohli-led Indian Cricket Team, which is currently touring England will be playing its second Test match on August 9-13 in this beautiful stadium. Although their record has not been great here losing 11 out of 17 Test matches played, there are some memorable moments associated with this place. Let us take a walk down the memory lane and relive India’s famous Lord’s moments. Here Are Four Changes Captain Virat Kohli Should Make for India vs England 2nd Test Match at Lord's.
First Test Since Becoming ICC Full Member (1932)
Although India had toured England earlier in 1911, they were not members of ICC then, and hence the matches lost its significance. Its first Test after gaining full membership of ICC was at Lord's in 1932. It was the only match of this tour which India lost by 158 runs. But even in defeat, this was to become a start of a memorable journey in Test match cricket of which it is currently the best side as per the latest ranking. Here's What Happened Last Time When India Faced England in a Test Match at Lord’s.
First World Cup Win (1983)
No one had given an outside chance to India when the Indian team led by the mercurial Kapil Dev arrived in England. But, with each game, the team hit new strides and awaiting them in the finals at Lord's was the might West Indies. After being bundled out for a paltry 183 while batting first, the match was as good as over. But the bowlers hit top form in the right moment and were backed by some great fielding to dismiss the Caribbean nation on 140 to help India lift its first World Cup trophy.
First Test Win at Lord’s (1986)
After years of England dominance, India finally managed to win a Test match at the Lord's thanks to some brilliant batting by Dilip Vengsarkar who scored a century in the first innings. Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev were the star performers with the bowl as India won the game by five wickets chasing 134 runs for victory. Kapil Dev was adjudged the man of the match, and the win helped India open up a 1-0 lead in the series which they eventually won.
NatWest Trophy Final Win (2002)
Sourav Ganguly was developing a young team under his leadership which had the potential to be world beaters. In the NatWest Trophy final against England at Lord's, the home team destroyed Indian bowling as it ploughed its way to 325 considered almost impossible to chase during those days. India started off well with Ganguly and Sehwag scoring quickfire fifties but then lost it way. In came two young men, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif in the middle and forged a memorable partnership that eventually helped India win the final. Scenes of Sourav Ganguly removing his t-shirt in celebration will always be etched in the memory of fans.
Ishant Sharma Scripts a Memorable Win (2014)
The second Test win at Lord's during India's Tour of England in 2014 happened after a gap of 28 years, and it was largely due to the brilliance of one man-fast bowler Ishant Sharma. India set England a target of 319 runs in the fourth innings thanks mainly to the partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar who scored crucial fifties. Ishant Sharma accounted for seven dismissals as his pace and swing was too hot to handle for the English batsmen.
India will have to play out of their depths at Lord's if they are to avoid sliding further down in the five-match Test series and these moments of pure sporting ecstasy should act as an inspiration for the Indian team to play some good competitive cricket.
