Bollywood had given three biopics so far as a tribute to some of the iconic contributors for team India in the world of cricket.Ā The most acclaimed films among thoseĀ were the documentary dramaĀ Sachin: A Billion Dreams (2017) onĀ India's legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and 2016'sĀ MS Dhoni: The Untold Story where Sushant Singh Rajput stepped in the shoes of former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.Ā Aamir Khan's Lagaan, Shreyas Talpade's Iqbal; 5 Beautiful Movies on Cricket You Can Watch Ahead of ICC World Cup 2019
EvenĀ Mohammad Azharuddin's controversial career was given a biographical drama in the 2016 film,Ā Azhar, starringĀ Emraan Hashmi in the lead. While the country is in the middle of cheering for Team India in the ongoing ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup, we look back at the careers of some of our fave World Cup stars from India and see whose life can make for a future biopic.
1 Yuvraj Singh
Can you imagine a man playing the entire World Cup with stage one Cancer? That's no drama, nor exaggeration, but pure fact. The man is none other than theĀ 2011 ICC World Cup's Player of the Tournament, Yuvraj Singh. Known as a thorough matchwinner, Yuvi has a terrific overseas record under his belt. Also, not to forget the unbelievable Stuart Broad's demolition hitting six humongous sixes a world record on its own.
His hardships and a miraculousĀ comeback after surviving Cancer is a motivational story in itself. Yuvraj Singh's life, thus, has a lot of concrete content for the makers to make a super-intriguing inspirational biopic. How about casting Aditya Roy Kapur, the left-handed contender from Bollywood, who couldĀ get close toĀ Yuvraj's persona on-screen?
2 Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid was the first batsmen in the Indian Cricket side to score a century in the 1999 world cup. He scored two back to back hundreds in the tournament, including the 104 not out against Kenya on May 23 and a 145 against Srilanka in the next game. Known as Mr Dependendable of the Indian Cricket team then, the film on Rahul Dravid can be aptly titled 'The Wall', highlighting him as the most reliable Test player with some of his game-changing innings.
Whether it was a spectacular 270 vs Pakistan at Rawalpindi in 2004 or the trail-blazing 233 and 72 not out vs Australia playing the Adelaide test in 2003, Dravid's career is filled with so many heroic innings. Known to have the ability and the temperament of a quality Test player, The Wall has adapted himself well in ODI and t20 format as well. Dravid was often criticized for his slow-paced game but then he shut everyone by scoring his fastest fifty that came out of just twenty-two balls while playing the One-Day match against the Kiwis in 2003, Hyderabad.
Who would not want such reenact such a riveting journey in Cinema? While we have Rahul Bose or Arjun RampalĀ in our minds to beĀ the reel-life version of Dravid, do suggest if you have any better casting suggestions.
3 Saurav Ganguly
India's Bengal Tiger, Saurav Ganguly, is often hailed by many as the best Indian captain till date.Ā Sourav Ganguly was appointed as India's captain in the year 2000 amidst the match-fixing controversy. Taking a beaten down team, Ganguly turned it into a winning combination with his aggressive tactics. Dada's vision was lauded by every cricket fan in India. The left-handed batsmen became India's most successful Test captain of all time. Ganguly successfully led India on 21 occasions, seven times more than Mohammad Azharuddin with the second most wins and led them for a record 49 matches. Oh Yes, and who don't want to see the movies recreate a bare-bodied Dada waving his shirt at the Lords' after India beat England in the 2004 Natwest Final?
As for who to play Ganguly on the big screen, what aboutĀ Abhay Deol?
4 Virender Sehwag
Delhi-born Virendra Sehwag is known for his sensational hitting style of play. Whether it was a Test Match, ODI or T20, his manner of batting never changes, which is what made Sehwag such an entertaining batsman to watch! Quoting Sehwag afterĀ his first ever sensational double century ODI knock, he had said, "When I was nearing the double ton, there was only one thought playing in my mind, whether to reach the milestone with a six or a four".
Batting in a tensed situation, but Viru would sing the famous Kishore Kumar song 'Chala Jata Hoon'. Apart from his ferocious batting, he was also known for his blunt replies and quirkiness on the field. Viru has an exceptional record as a batsman scoring 17,000-plus international runs along with 38 international centuries. He also held a total of sixteen 150-plus scores that includes seven double hundreds two triple centuries.
As to who should play Sehwag on screen, we would like to go with Akshay Kumar.
5 Gautam Gambhir
Gautam GambirĀ is one ofĀ India's unsung heroes, who deserves more credit than he gets for what he has done for Indian cricket. Gambhir has served India in all three formats of the game. From becoming the number one batsman in the ICC Test ranking in 2009 to bagging the ICC player of the year award same year, Gambhir was known for his consistency and his aggression on the field.
