After a culturally-rich 2018 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on April 3, participants from 71 nations kicked off the sporting action on April 4. After all, there are 275 medals in 19 sports up for contention. The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Gold Coast 2018 is taking place on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, scheduled between April 4 to April 15, 2018.
The 12-day competition is lined up with one exciting sporting event after another with an equal number of medals for men and women for the first time ever. Out of the 275 medals, 133 will be each presented to men and women respectively, with the nine remaining medals being reserved for mix-gendered sports. In the previous edition of Commonwealth Games, the Glasgow 2014, England had topped the medal tally with 174 medals. 215-member Indian contingent ended the tournament finishing fifth at the medal table winning a total of 64 medals including 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze. This time around India is fielding 227 participants who are aiming to bring highest of accolades and glory to the nation at Gold Coast Games. P Gururaja has given India a great start on the opening day of action and now others will look forward to keeping the winning momentum going.
