The stage is set as the Commonwealth Games 2018, will kick-start today at the Gold Coast, in Australia. Google Doodle in its cool way flagged off even event by putting out the colorful animation of the sporting events that are slated to happen in Australia. The Commonwealth Games will feature sportsmen from 70 countries who will be on their quest to medal.
The Google Doodle is seen in action as its Os takes us through various sports in the Games, including boxing, lawn bowls, para-cycling, and netball. The sole aim of the Games is to inculcate the values of sportsmanship. The mega event was founded in 1930 when 11 countries from the Commonwealth of Nations sent athletes to Ontario, Canada as a mark of their participation. Back then, the Commonwealth Games were known as British Empire Games.
Since 1930, the Games take place every 4 years. However, the mega event didn’t happen in 1942 and 1946 owing to the Second World War As mentioned above, this time the mega event will take place Gold Coast, Australia. According to Google Doodle, the best part about the Games this time is that it will witness the largest integration of events and para-events, and for the first time, women will compete for the same number of medals as men.
Blue Koala Borobi is the official Mascot for the Season and will be cheering the athletes throughout the competition. Borobi’s looks is inspired by a drawing of a Brisbane schoolteacher named Merrilyn Krohn.
