Singh and his correspondents were sentenced to death for murdering John P Saunders, a British police officer. Bhagat Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, had actually conspired to assassinate James Scott, a British Superintendent, after he had ordered the army to take action National Independent leader Lala Lajpat Rai. But they instead murdered Saunders following a case of mistaken identity. All three were hanged to death on March 23, 1931 in the Lahore Jail.
