Bajrang Punia clinches India’s third gold in wrestling at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old defeated Kane Charig of Wales in Men's Freestyle 65 kg Wrestling Event to win the gold medal on day 10 of Commonwealth Games 2018. India’s medal tally at CWG 2018 has moved to 36 medals including 17 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze so far in the multi-sports event. India is behind Australia and England in the medal table and team standings but well ahead of Canada and South Africa who are on fourth and fifth places respectively.
Bajrang gave a phenomenal performance at Carrara Sports Arena 1 against Kane. The young grappler registered Victory by Technical Superiority that means he did not allow any points to be scored by the opponent. In round 1, Bajrang scored the perfect ten with 2,2,2,2,2 technical advantage points. This is the second time in Commonwealth Games 2018 a wrestler has won the match with such dominance after Sushil Kumar did it in Men's Freestyle 74 kg on Thursday. Bajrang has earlier won silver medal in Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow in Men's 61 kg as well as in Incheon 2014 Asian Games.
After Bajrang Punia’s gold medal in Men's Freestyle 65 kg, Indian wrestling team has won a total of five medals so far – Sushil Kumar in Men's Freestyle 74 kg, Rahul Aware in Men's Freestyle 57 kg, Babita Kumari in Women's Freestyle 53 kg and Kiran in Women's Freestyle 76 kg. India has bagged most number of medals in shooting (overall 15 – Gold 6, Silver 4, Bronze 5) followed by weightlifting (overall 9 – 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze).
