CWG 2018: Saina Nehwal Wins Gold medal, Beats PV Sindhu 21-18, 23-21 in the Final of Women’s Singles
It turned out to be a one-sided affair as Saina showed aggression to outplay her compatriot.
Saina Nehwal dished out an impressive performance in the Commonwealth Games 2018 (CWG 2018) Women’s Singles Gold Medal match as she defeated compatriot PV Sindhu 21-18, 23-21. With it, Sindhu bagged the prized Gold as India’s medal tally now reads 62 (26 Gold, 17 Silver, and 19 Bronze). Sindhu apparently had to settle for Silver. It turned out to be a one-sided affair as Saina showed aggression to outplay her fellow national. This is Saina’s second CWG gold, her first came in 2010 Commonwealth Games against Wong Mew Choo. Saina began on an aggressive not collecting the opening points. After the 4-4 scoreline in the first game, Saina clinched five straight points to take a lead in the contest. The 28-year-old shuttler then continued to chip away with lead. However, towards the end of the opening game, Sindhu saved four match points as she tried to stay in the contest. CWG 2018 Medals Tally
Though Sindhu looked determined, it was Saina who walked away with the honours in the opening game with a 21-18 scoreline.
It looked like, for most part, Sindhu will clinch the second game to take the match in the decider. She started aggressively and at one stage had a three-point lead in her kitty with the scoreline reading 8-5. She maintained the three-point lead till 15-11.
Saina then narrowed the gap after winning three back to back points. However, Sindhu once again gained the three-point lead to make it 18-14 in her favour.
Towards the end of the second game, it was a see-saw battle. Sindhu with score reading 20-19 looked all set to take the match into the final game. However, Saina not only saved the game point but converted it into the match point and eventually emerged victorious by 23-21 after winning two back to back points.
