2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games: Manu Bhaker Leads the List of Indian Athletes Participating in Buenos Aires Youth Olympics

A contingent of 68 members, including 47 athletes competing in 13 sports during the prestigious tournament has departed for Argentina.

The 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, officially known as the III Summer Youth Olympic Games is all scheduled to kick-off on October 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The international multi-sport tournament is organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), providing young athletes with an opportunity to excel in sports as well as broaden their minds through cultural exchange programs. India is one of the 206 nations to be participating in the Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games. A 47-member Indian contingent, largest-ever from the country are travelling in hopes to win medals at the big stage. Shooting sensation Manu Bhaker is named the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games (YOG). A contingent of 68 members, including 47 athletes competing in 13 sports during the prestigious tournament has departed for Argentina. Goa Olympic Association Secretary Gurudutta D Bhakta will be the Chef-de-Mission of the contingent. The send-off ceremony took place on October 1, which was attended by Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajeev Mehta. The opening ceremony of Summer Youth Olympic Games 2018 will take place on October 6 (at 4.30am IST on October 7). 16-year-old Manu speaking to PTI said, "It is a great honour for me. I never expected to be the flag-bearer for the Indian contingent."

In the inaugural edition of Summer Youth Olympics in 2010 held in Singapore, India had managed to bag a total of eight medals, which included six silver and two bronze earning them a 58th place on the medal table. Four years later at 2014 Summer Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, India could only manage two medals – a silver and a bronze. Coming to the upcoming Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, India certainly has athletes who can win country its first gold medal in the YOG. We have the likes of Saurabh Chaudhary who is Asian Games 2018 gold medallist, Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manu Bhaker, Junior Asian Championship silver medallist Mansi Ahlawat and so many more country’s future stars.

The Indian squad comprises 46 athletes competing in 13 sports: archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, field hockey, judo, rowing, shooting, sport climbing, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. It is going to be the first time for India in Youth Olympics as they make debut in field hockey 5s and sport climbing.
