India’s PV Sindhu lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the finals of the 2018 BWF World Championships by 19-21, 10-21. This was her second consecutive loss at the Badminton World Championship. At one point in time it looked the World no 3 is about to have the last laugh as she led the game by 11-8 but a couple of back to back points from Marin brought her back into the game. Sindhu, however, fought hard with a brilliant smash but Marin’s crosscourt shots gave her the lead and she won the first game.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Marin dominated the second set as she started off with an amazing lead of 2-0 which then went on to 5 -0. Sindhu so far had not scored a single point and was stunned by Marin’s aggressive play. The Spaniard played a few brutal smashes and got the lead of 8-2. During the break, Carolina led the game by 11-2. This lead made it difficult for Sindhu to make a comeback into the game. (Check out the video highlights here)
However, after the break, Sindhu tried to make a comeback into the crucial game by getting a point. But two back-to-back points strengthened Carolina Marin’s position into the game and was quite close to clinching her third victory. Sindhu once again revived her stand by hitting a brilliant smash which did get her a point but by now, Carolina was only three points behind to clinch the glory. The game ended with Sindhu losing by 10-21 and the Indian getting a Silver Medal.
