US President-elect Donald Trump’s defence secretary pick, Pete Hegseth, has sparked controversy after his remarks on women in combat roles went viral. Speaking on the Shawn Ryan Show podcast on November 7, Hegseth argued that women should not serve in combat due to physical differences that could impact performance and increase casualties. He cited disparities in bone density, lung capacity, and muscle strength, emphasising that military standards should not be compromised to accommodate women in traditionally male-dominated roles. A former Fox News commentator, Hegseth further criticised “woke” policies within the military, calling for the dismissal of senior Pentagon leaders who have promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. He stated that any general or admiral involved in DEI policies should be removed to ensure the military remains focused on combat readiness. The comments have gone viral on social media.
