A state of emergency has been declared in Grindavik, southwest Iceland, following the eruption of the Sundhnukur volcano on Thursday, August 22. The eruption began at 9:26 PM (local time) after a series of earthquakes triggered volcanic activity. Evacuations were promptly carried out as the area was illuminated by orange lava, and thick smoke billowed into the night sky. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) confirmed the eruption is emerging from a fissure nearly 4 kilometres long. Videos and images from the scene show dramatic scenes of molten lava flowing from the fissure. Iceland: Volcano Erupts in Reykjanes Peninsula, Prompts Evacuation in Blue Lagoon (Watch Video).
