Convicted of first-degree reckless homicide and other charges, Miu claimed self-defense, stating he felt threatened while searching for a lost cellphone. The attack killed 17-year-old Isaac Schuman and seriously injured four others. St. Croix County Judge R. Michael Waterman emphasised the survivors' severe injuries and Miu's poor decisions under provocation. Prosecutors had sought a 70-year term.
