By July 2026, all public schools in California will be required to have gender-neutral restrooms, giving another layer of safety for the state's LGBTQ+ children. Although other towns and school districts throughout the country have adopted gender-neutral restrooms, a new bill signed into law by Gov Gavin Newsom on Saturday makes California the first to require them in all public schools. The bill was one of three that became law in recent days to support LGBTQ+ youth, including a new requirement for schools to provide "cultural competency" training to staff members on LGBTQ+ issues and the formation of a task force to identify LGBTQ+ students' needs across the state and push forward initiatives to support them.
