Prosecutors in US have released body-camera footage showing the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black woman, by Illinois sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson. Deputies, responding to Massey’s 911 call about a prowler, conversed with her for 18 minutes at her Springfield home on July 6. The situation escalated when Grayson ordered Massey to drop a pot of hot water before shooting her in the face. Grayson has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct following an investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office. If convicted, he faces life in prison. The footage shows deputies entering Massey’s home and confronting her about the pot on the stove. After she picked it up, Grayson threatened her before firing. Massey was declared dead at the hospital. Her family was unaware of the deputy’s involvement until the video’s release. Her father, James Wilburn, expressed shock and grief at a press conference. Sonya Massey Killing: US President Joe Biden Calls Shooting of Black Woman by Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy ‘Unthinkable and Senseless’.
