Peru is reportedly facing backlash for classifying trans and intersex people as "mentally ill". In its defence, the health ministry of the South American country said that its decision was necessary to ensure that public health services in Peru could provide complete mental health care for everyone. According to a report in Insider Paper, the official decree is expected to change the language in the Essentials Health Insurance Plan to indicate that trans and intersex people have a mental disorder. Even after facing backlash, the health ministry on Friday, May 10, assured that trans and other LGBTQ+ individuals won’t face conversion therapies.
