The Shia Islamist parties in Iraq are pushing to amend the "Al-Jafaari" or the Personal Status Law (Law No. 188) in Iraq and reduce the permissible age of marriage for girls from the current legal limit of 18 years (religious limit is 15 years) to only 9 years old. The draft bill proposing this reduction was introduced by independent MP Raed al-Maliki. If passes, the bill would legalise child marriage in Iraq. The bill would also allow religious heads from "the offices of the Shiite and Sunni endowments" to finalise marriages rather than the courts. The Iraqi people protested against this bill in a demonstration expressing how these changes would negatively impact the rights and wellbeing of women and children in Iraq. Suhalia Al Assam, a women’s rights activist, told The National, "The Iraqi community categorically rejects these proposals, it is a degrading step for both Iraqi men and women alike. This is what we have been fighting against for years." Middle East Crisis: Rockets Fired From Lebanon Towards Israel, Video Shows Interception by Iron Dome.
