According to a Thursday night alert from the National Hurricane Centre at 11 p.m. ET, Hurricane Lee has grown into a strong Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph as it spins across the Atlantic well to the east of the Caribbean. In the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Lee, a Category 1 hurricane earlier on Thursday, has been rapidly strengthening and has doubled its wind speeds in the past 24 hours. As per the hurricane centre's 11 p.m. advisory, the storm was situated roughly 700 miles to the east of the northern Leeward Islands.
