France decided to pay homage to the victims of the North African country by turning the Eiffel Tower in the dark at 11 pm on Saturday. This was done as Morocco searches for survivors in the midst of the strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated the southwest of Marrakech and the cities close to the epicentre. While the most severely impacted places were in the adjacent highlands, the earthquake that occurred late on Friday night in Morocco's High Atlas mountains caused damage to historic structures in Marrakech, which is the closest city to the epicentre.
