An earthquake of magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale is reported to have hit the waters off the Portugal coast, 7.7 km south-east of its capital Lisbon, and 74 km south-west of Setúbal on August 26 at around 5:11 AM local time. However, Portugal’s seismological agency Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) put the magnitude slightly lower at 5.3. The quake in the ocean affected four countries on the East Atlantic coast - Gibraltar, Morocco, Portugal and Spain. The ground shook because of the quake. However, the details of its depth were not confirmed in the preliminary seismic data of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.
