A group of kayakers and snorkelers made a rare and remarkable discovery off the coast of San Diego last weekend when they encountered a 12-foot-long oarfish, a deep-sea creature seldom seen near the surface. This silvery fish, often referred to as a “doomsday fish” due to its mythical association with predicting natural disasters, was found floating dead in the water off the US coast. Oarfish sightings are extremely rare, with only 20 instances of the fish washing up in California since 1901, according to Ben Frable, a fish expert at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. With the assistance of marine experts, the group managed to bring the oarfish ashore for further study. Sign of Imminent Disaster: 'Doomsday Fish' Caught 30 Hours Before Taiwan Earthquake by Philippines Fisherman Fuels Ancient Superstition.
