Chinese Firm Sold Satellites to Russia's Wagner Group for Intelligence a Year Prior to Ukraine Invasion: Report
The satellite photos were reportedly also used to aid Wagner's activities in Africa, as well as its failed rebellion in June.
According to a document seen by AFP, the Russian mercenary group Wagner signed a deal with a Chinese corporation to buy two satellites and use their images to enhance its intelligence operations as the organisation tried to advance Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The deal was signed in November 2022, more than a year into Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, in which the Wagner group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, played a crucial role. The satellite photos were reportedly also used to aid Wagner's activities in Africa, as well as its failed rebellion in June, which resulted in the group's de facto dissolution, followed by the death of Prigozhin and other key individuals in an aviation accident in August.
