A man was held while attempting to smuggle 104 live snakes into mainland China by concealing them in his trousers. The unnamed traveller was stopped after passing through the "nothing to declare" gate at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen crossing. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 104 snakes stuffed in six canvas drawstring bags hidden in his trousers. A statement from China Customs described the variety of the reptiles, noting, “Each bag was found to contain living snakes in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colours.” Video footage released by customs shows agents inspecting transparent plastic bags filled with the live snakes, mostly small, but nonetheless a large and writhing haul for anyone to carry.
