In response to escalating student protests, Bangladesh has ordered a nationwide shutdown of its mobile internet network for "security" reasons, according to the junior telecommunications minister. Reportedly, the protests, which have resulted in at least nine deaths, including six on Tuesday, erupted over demands to reform the quota system in government jobs. Protesters argue that the system, reserving up to 30 per cent of jobs for veterans' families, is discriminatory and benefits supporters of PM Sheikh Hasina. The clashes with police have led to over 100 injuries and forced the closure of schools and colleges. Bangladesh: Violence Over Job Quota Protest Kills 6 Across Country; Schools and Colleges To Shut.
