Solar Storm Alert: NOAA Predicts 'Severe' Geomagnetic Storm Today, May Disrupt Communication, Power Systems and Trigger Aurora; Check Details
In a significant space weather event, a ‘severe’ solar storm is set to hit Earth. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch, the first of its kind since 2005.
In a significant space weather event, a ‘severe’ solar storm is set to hit Earth. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch, the first of its kind since 2005. The storm is a result of at least five earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that were observed and are expected to arrive as early as Friday, May 10, 2024, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024. These CMEs are massive bursts of solar plasma and magnetic fields that can disrupt Earth’s magnetic field. A G4 is a severe strength geomagnetic storm, which means more impacts will be felt than a typical geomagnetic storm. Such a strong solar storm has not been seen in nearly two decades. A G4-class geomagnetic storm can damage satellites, cause fluctuations in power grids and trigger aurora. Further, GPS disruptions and shortwave radio blackouts are also possible.
