Elon Musk explained how SpaceX's Mechazilla system works. The post was shared by Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) on October 13, 2024. The post featured a video where Musk detailed how the Mechazilla would catch the Super Heavy booster in mid-air. The tower’s arms will pluck the 250-ton Starlink booster, which will descend at more than half the speed of sound. As the booster slows to almost zero velocity, the Mechazilla's arms will move into place, closing in on the descending booster. Musk admits that while the success rate is uncertain, it is above zero. Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully completed its fifth test flight and made history by catching a Super Heavy Starship booster using special "Chopstick arms" on Sunday. Elon Musk shared a post on October 14, 2024, and updated about the Starship booster. He said, “Just inspected the Starship booster, which the arms have now placed back in its launch mount. Looks great!” In his update, Musk mentioned a few minor issues and said, “A few outer engine nozzles are warped from heating.” However, he reassured that these problems could easily be fixed. The SpaceX’s Starship booster is designed to achieve rapid reusability. Elon Musk explained that the ultimate goal is for the booster to be ready for reflight within an hour after launch. The booster returns to Earth in around five minutes, with the rest of the time spent in reloading propellant and placing a ship on top of the booster. SpaceX Successfully Catches Massive Starship Booster During Groundbreaking Flight 5 Rocket Launch and Landing (Watch Video).
