India have produced some outstanding athletes who have gone on to script history and make the nation proud on several occasions. Murlikant Petkar is one of those stars whose story stands as an example of determination and tenacity. Before joining the Indian army, Petkar specialised in boxing and an unfortunate incident during the India vs Pakistan 1965 war left him with multiple bullet injuries. He was subsequently run over by an army vehicle as well, which left him with a paralysed lower body. But that did not stop him. In the 1972 Paralympic Games, Petkar scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in Paralympics when he achieved the top prize in 50 m freestyle swimming. Earlier this year, a Bollywood movie named 'Chandu Champion' was made about his life. Meanwhile, India have sent its largest contingent of para-athletes (84) for the Paris Paralympics Games 2024. PCI President Devendra Jhajharia Exudes Confidence in India’s Potential Success in Paris Paralympics 2024.
