Members of the Algerian contingent threw flowers on the Seine River during the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony on Friday, July 27. This was done as a tribute to the many Algerians who were beaten, shot and thrown into the Seine River on October 17, 1961, after they had headed towards Paris for a peaceful protest. In a video which has gone viral, members of the Algerian Paris Olympics 2024 were seen tossing flowers into the Seine River as their boat paraded on the water body. Earlier in 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron had condemned this incident, calling it 'inexcusable'. In a historic first, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was held outside a stadium.
