The India women's national football team suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Nepal in the semifinal of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women's Championship 2024 on October 27. The match was riddled with controversial and dramatic moments which saw players leave the pitch after a Nepal goal was disallowed. The first half was goalless and the drama unfolded after the break when Nepal women's national football team forward Rekha Paudel was shown a red card by the referee. India subsequently took the lead in the 62nd minute of the game through Sangita Basfore who scored from outside the box and soon after, Nepal equalised when all the Indian players weren't totally on the pitch. The referee disallowed the goal and the Nepal players protested, with the game being halted for more than an hour. They returned though and Nepal found the leveller through Sabitra Bhandari. The match went into penalties where Nepal scored all four attempts while India could net just two through Manisha and Karishma Shirvoikar.
