According to a statement released by Sri Lankan Cricket, Hasaranga stated in his resignation letter that it is in the best interest of the team that he decided to be relieved of his captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player.
Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down from the role of captain ahead of facing India in three-match T20I series at home. Hasaranga led Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 but couldn't deliver desired results as they couldn't qualify for the Super 8 and were knocked out of the group stages. The Sri Lankan spinner, who was appointed as the T20I captain, only last year, led the team in 10 matches. It is yet to be confirmed who will succeed him as captain of the Sri Lanka T20I team for the India series.
