Mumbai Win Irani Cup 2024, Clinch 15th Title After 27-Year Wait By Virtue of Taking First Innings Lead Against Rest of India
Sarfaraz Khan was deservedly named Man of the Match for his sensational double hundred in the first innings, that laid the foundation for this dominant victory for Mumbai. Tanush Kotian was one of Mumbai's star performers in the second innings, scoring a century.
Mumbai have won the Irani Cup 2024, beating the Rest of India side by virtue of taking a first innings lead. The Ranji Trophy champions rode on a dominant batting performance in the first innings, largely possible due to Sarfaraz Khan's blazing 222 as they scored a mammoth 222. Captain Ajinkya Rahane also scored 97 runs. In response, the Rest of India side also had an impressive show with the bat, being bowled out for 416 runs with Abhimanyu Easwaran being the top-scorer with 191 runs. With a 121-run lead, Mumbai batted again and this time, it was Tanush Kotian who struck his second First-Class century with Prithvi Shaw (76) and Mohit Avasthi (51) making significant contributions as well. This was a 15th Irani Cup title for Mumbai and it came after a wait of 27 long years. The last time that Mumbai had won the Irani Cup title was way back in the 1997/98 season.
