A thumping 102-run win for South Africa in their opening fixture of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka at Delhi as they beat them by 102 runs registering the first points on the table. Batting first the Proteas were at their destructive best with three of their batters scoring a century. Aiden Markram was the fastest in 49 deliveries and he was followed by Quinton de Kock (100) and Rassie van der Dussen (108). South Africa put up a target of a record-breaking 429 on board. Chasing it, Sri Lanka started well but gradually the chase fell off the track. Dasun Shanaka, Kushal Mendis and Charith Asalanka propelled them to a respectable total reducing the margin of the defeat.
